Our cribs use massive solid wood corner posts and top rails. Parts don’t flex and give when you push on them. We go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that our joints stay joined, and don’t work loose over time. Removable pieces are threaded into steel inserts permanently glued into the wood. When you remove a drawer and look inside a chest, you will see how many corner braces and cleats we use to make our furniture tough. Anatomy of a Westwood Drawer Box: You’re going to be opening your chest or changer drawers a lot over the coming years. Drawers are usually the first thing to fail on low quality furniture. At Westwood, we build our drawers to last. When you’re shopping for furniture, pull out a drawer and see how it’s made. What you find hidden within part of the furniture you don’t normally see will tell you a lot about the company and its design philosophy. Here’s what goes into one of ours. We only use 5 piece English dovetailed drawer boxes. Pull out a drawer and look at the competition. Often you will find stapled, fiberboard drawer boxes. Our drawer boxes are fully finished wood, with clean, smooth surfaces. Drawer fronts are easily replaceable in case of damage. Flip one of our drawers over. You’ll see wood center supports (to prevent the drawer bottom from sagging when loaded), and reinforcing corner blocks in every corner. All of our chests use high-quality precision ball bearing drawer glides. These are seldom found even on adult furniture. Our quiet, smooth, and strong drawer glides are something you will appreciate every time you open a drawer. Finishes: We use only top quality durable and safe finishing materials. Our finishes are tested for lead content, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals. Quality Control: Our independent quality control experts check every production run of our furniture. If there’s a problem, it doesn’t leave the factory. Beyond the testing required by the US government and JPMA certification program, we send our products to an independent third party testing lab after every single production run.
High Standards Safety is designed and engineered into all our products. Westwood products are built to standards that exceed all current US mandatory and voluntary standards. We verify compliance with these standards using our own employees, as well as with testing carried out by an independent, third party off-site lab. We do this for every single production run, which is far more often than we are required to do. All of our products are made in a new, state of the art plant in Vietnam, and we have our own employees present for quality control whenever our furniture is in production. No juvenile furniture company has a stronger commitment to product safety than Westwood Design. Finishes We go to great lengths to ensure the safety of our finishes. We do our own independent testing for lead, phthalates, and other harmful materials after our furniture is finished. We have done this since the very first piece of furniture we ever built. Finish Testing We test all our products far more extensively than we are required to do. Our finishes have been tested not only for lead, but also against the ASTM F963 standard, which ensures that toys are non-toxic. It is not a requirement for cribs, but we do it anyway. Anti-tip Straps All of our hutches come with anti-tip safety straps included. These attach the furniture to the wall and can prevent tall, heavy furniture from being tipped over by a child. We strongly encourage you to look around your house and see if you have any other furniture that should be secured. Similar straps are available from any baby specialty store, hardware store, or home improvement store.
